Frequently Asked Questions
Am I too young?
Children are accepted at the age of 6 or older. However some classes
have a waiting list so it is a good idea to register when they
are younger so when the time comes they will be guaranteed a place.
Am I too old?
You’re only as old as you feel, adult pupils of all ages
are welcome!! That said, Irish dancing is strenuous. You must
be reasonably fit and able to move and, as with any new excercise,
you should consult your physician before starting classes. Please
note, this is not a ceili class, you will learn solo step dancing
and team figure dancing.
Do we have recitals?
Recitals are not the tradition of Irish dancing. More advanced
pupils and selected beginners perform in community events.
Do I have to compete?
It is not essential but pupils are encouraged to attend feiseanna. (“fesh-i-na”)
or Irish dance competitions. The focus for beginners at these events is
not on competitive success. Feiseanna expose dancers to skilled dancers
from all over the state of Florida and beyond. They provide wonderful
motivation for improvement and dancers also make a lot of new friends!
What do I wear?
Wear T-shirts and shorts, adults can wear long stretch pants. Dancers
can wear sneakers for the first month and then must order the proper shoes
by mail or purchase them from vendors at feiseanna.
Is Irish dancing expensive?
The cost of classes is similar to any form of dance and the beginners
costume is inexpensive and reusable. If dancers continue on to a more
advanced level, costuming and travel can become moderately expensive.
Do we learn “Irish tap”?
There are two types of Irish step dancing, soft shoe and hard shoe (taps).
Pupils learn soft shoe first, then progress to hard shoe.
Is this a certified school?
Yes, Myra is a fully qualified T.C.R.G. (teachers qualification) and is
a member of the Irish Dancing Teachers Association of North America.
